A Brief History of Pates Chapel Baptist Church:

Pates Chapel Baptist Church was organized September 18, 1913 in an old school house building on property donated by Isom Pate. Rev. W.M. Olive was moderator of the organization meeting. Charter members were J.A. Clecker, Pearl Cleckler, T.A. Caton, Rebecca Caton, Madison Hubbard, Joycie Hubbard, Lucy Robinson and Maude Robinson.

The first church clerk was J.A. Cleckler, appointed September 20, 1913 and the first pastor was Rev HG Williams, appointed September 21, 1913. The first delegates to attend the Chilton Baptist Association meeting were G.W. Nasworthy, J.A. Cleckler an
d T.A. Caton, elected representatives on October 8, 1913.

The original building was heavily damaged March 21, 1932 by the worst tornado in Chilton County history. The people came together and rebuilt it and worshiped there until 1948 when the first brick building was constructed on property acquired from Lewis Pate, while Rabie Crumpton was pastor. The pastorium was built in 1974 and the present sanctuary was built in 1977, both while Alvin Porter was pastor. The fellowship center was built in 1987 while Paul Holmes was pastor. All property presently owned by the church
was either donated or purchased from Isom Pate and son Lewis Pate.

Six preachers/pastors have been licensed and ordained from the membership: Arlene Dawson, Curtis Patterson, Buddy Hayes, James Cleckler, Allen Patterson and David Hand.

From the vision and hard work of those eight charter members, and by the Grace of God, Pates Chapel Baptist Church now has membership of 360+ as well as a vital ministry of preaching, teaching, singing and winning the lost. As we enter the future together, may we continue the vision of our forefathers and the work of the 'body of Christ' on this earth.
